PATRICK UNIACKE BAYLY

Could this be Nenagh’s most decorated person….?

Imagine someone born in the middle of Ireland but despite having no nautical background, becomes an Admiral. Patrick (Pat) Uniacke Bayly was such a man.

Patrick was born at Bayly Farm, Ballinaclough, Nenagh on 04/08/1914 to Launcelot Francis Sanderson Bayly and Eileen Maude Bayly. Launcelot himself had a reputation as a proficient Watercolourist, Science Fiction novelist and Travel writer.

Patrick was initially educated at Aravon in Bray, Wicklow and from there to the Royal Naval College in Dartmouth. Patrick joined the Royal Navy in 1932 as a Midshipman . He took part in WW2 and the Korean War. If you wish to hear him recount his maritime exploits in his own words, his recordings can be found on the Imperial War Museum site at:

Meanwhile Patrick had also became Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB) in 1964. In 1965 he was made Admiral President of the RN Staff College at Greenwich. He was invested as Knight Commander of the British Empire (KBE) on 29/10/1968.

Notwithstanding, he was also awarded the Legion of Merit, Legionnaire by the U.S. The Legion of Merit is one of the U. S. military's most prestigious awards, ranking just below the Silver Star, and ahead of the Distinguished Flying Cross. It is one of only two decorations to be issued as neck wear, the other being the Medal of Honor. It is also the first U.S. medal to be awarded to citizens of other nations for their outstanding service, fidelity, and loyalty in combat or non-combat positions.

Patrick died 01/05/1998 at Dunning House, Liphook, Hants. He is commemorated on a plaque on the wall of the St Mary’s Church of Ireland, Nenagh, dedicated to the Bayly family.
